Originally designed as a safe haven for children to splash and play, the Children’s Pool in La Jolla has become one of San Diego’s most charming attractions. Constructed in 1932, a sturdy seawall was built to protect the shore from incoming waves, creating a delightful spot for little ones to paddle without a worry.
Wildlife Sanctuary
While the beach is still a wonderful swimming spot, it has also transformed into a cozy retreat for harbor seals and sea lions. Just north of the beach, Seal Rock is home to hundreds of seals who love to bathe, bask in the sun, and even give birth to their pups right on the beach. These marine mammals can be spotted lounging year-round, adding the perfect touch to your visit!
Wildlife Safety: If you decide to step onto the sand, be sure to maintain a safe distance from the wildlife, especially the seals. Do not attempt to touch or disturb them. Please note that the beach is closed to the public during the harbor seal pupping season, which runs from December 15 to May 15 annually.
Diver's Paradise
The Children’s Pool is also a favorite among scuba divers, thanks to the vibrant reefs just offshore. While these underwater treasures make for fantastic exploration, do keep an eye out for strong currents and hazards, especially during high surf.
